PASS ON THE GIFT. Dan West, founder of Heifer International, created a unique giving model called 'Pass on the Gift.' For every gift received, the recipient must pass on a gift of equal or greater value to another person in need - creating a ripple of hope that passes on from family to family, community to community, generation to generation. It is in that spirit I 'Pass on the Gift' to you so you may pass it on to others.

12 Myths About Hunger

Posted by Heifer Portland on July 29, 2009

Why are there people who go hungry? In most developed countries, a general scarcity of food is seldom the cause of hunger. The United States, for example, produces enough food for its 303 million people as well as for much of the rest of the world. It is the lack of means to acquire food that is the problem.

Give a man a Heifer...Feed Him for a Lifetime. Megan Isenberg takes into consideration a range of ethical issues when procuring, preparing and eating food. Her interest also includes sustainable living, the impact on natural and human environments, animal welfare, workers' rights, and food safety. So when she received her Heifer International Gift catalog in the mail, she instantly became a fan of the organization.

Exciting News @ Heifer Portland

Posted by Noland Hoshino On Thursday, November 12, 2009 View Comments

Exciting things are happening here at Heifer Portland.

WE'RE MOVING!

What!?!?!

Not us exactly, but the Heifer Portland blog is moving to something bigger and better.

We started the Heifer Portland blog back in Feb 09 as a medium to communicate with our volunteers and supporters in our community. Since then the blog has evolved into a sophisticated design that is admired by Heifer International headquarters and other volunteer groups around the world.

In the next few weeks we will be moving our blog to a central Heifer International blog website. This will make it easier to locate a volunteer group and find out what Heifer International is doing in your community. For example, if you live in Sacramento, California, and you want to find a Heifer volunteer group in your city, just go to the Heifer International blog website and locate Heifer Sacramento, or Heifer Boston, Heifer Phoenix, Heifer Detroit, and so forth.

For the Heifer volunteer groups, there will be a blog template (similar to Heifer Portland) on the Heifer International blog website for you to download and use. Simple, easy and fun.

We will keep you posted when the Heifer Portland blog makes the transition.

In the meantime, here are some other exciting news...

At the BlogWorld and New Media Expo, Bryan (and Haley the cow) did an interview with WhatGives!?: A Site for Social Good. See the interview here or visit www.whatgives.com

The other day I did a picture storyboard about how I got involved with Heifer International on Whrrl. Whrrl is a super duper cool web and iPhone application that lets you tell and share a story with photos and text. Our friends at Spirit Jump told me about Whrrl and how easy it was to put a short story together. The next day, my little story is now Whrrl's "Featured Story" website front page. You can view the slide show here or visit whrll.com

We thank all of our volunteers and supporters for making Heifer Portland one of the best grassroots volunteer group today. What started as a seedling back in Feb 09 has grown into a tree of life...growing bigger and bigger each day.

Thank you.

Carrying a Cow for a Cause

Posted by Noland Hoshino On Wednesday, November 11, 2009 View Comments
During our campaign to win the NameYourCause.com contest to BlogWorld, Bryan and I used a 30" stuffed cow animal (which I named "Haley") to gain votes.

We took pictures of "Haley" with signs "Vegas or Bust" and "Vote for us," to maximize the cuteness factor to win the contest. It worked because Heifer Portland placed in the Top 10 and we went to BlogWorld!

Since "Haley" was instrumental to our success, we decided to take her to the BlogWorld and New Media conference in Las Vegas. She was too large to be packed in our suitcase, so we had to carry her on our travel. I thought, "If I'm going to look silly carrying a large cow around I might as well publicize it," so I tied a large cow bell around her neck.

"Clank, clank, clank!" What we didn't expect was how much attention we got carrying a cow.

When we rode the shuttle bus from the airport parking lot to the terminal, people on the bus were wondering why we were carrying a large cow. I said, "We are on our way to the BlogWorld and New Media convention in Las Vegas for Heifer International." "What's Heifer International?" the friendly strangers asked. Then we would tell them all about Heifer International's good will to end hunger and poverty while caring for the earth. This scenario happened several times during our travel.

My favorite was when we left Las Vegas and had a bite to eat at a restaurant in the Las Vegas airport. The waitress asked, "What's up with the cow?" Again, we told her that we were volunteers for Heifer International and we were on our way home from the conference. She asked, "What's Heifer International?" After explaining to her about the nonprofit organization and handing her a business card and gift catalog she was thrilled. A few minutes later, she brought over another waitress to learn about Heifer International.

The lesson here...carry a cow for a cause (or anything else). You might think it's silly, but you'll get people's attention and start a conversation.

What do you do to broadcast your message for your cause?

Got an Idea to Resolve Global Hunger and Poverty?

Posted by Noland Hoshino On Monday, November 09, 2009 View Comments
Everyday we read stories about global issues, such as hunger and poverty, life threatening illnesses, human trafficking, climate change and global warming, and you say to yourself "I have an idea!"

Here's an opportunity to put your idea on the table and be evaluated by some of the world's most intelligent people.

On November 14th, Mensa International is launching the first brainstorming benefit -- Idea Aid. For a single week, some of the world’s brightest minds — including members of Mensa International, along with academics, students, marketers and renowned experts —will come together online to focus on complex issues that affect everyone, everywhere.

The first issue: The Heifer Challenge -- Eradicate Global Poverty. The goal is to find new ways of ending hunger and poverty, while caring for the earth.

To participate in this landmark brainstorming benefit event, please register here or visit www.ideaaid.com

Idea Aid is not about giving "Moo-lah," but donating ideas. What's on your mind?
