12 Myths About Hunger

Posted by Heifer Portland

Why are there people who go hungry? In most developed countries, a general scarcity of food is seldom the cause of hunger. The United States, for example, produces enough food for its 303 million people as well as for much of the rest of the world. It is the lack of means to acquire food that is the problem.

Exciting News @ Heifer Portland

Exciting things are happening here at Heifer Portland.

WE'RE MOVING!

What!?!?!

Not us exactly, but the Heifer Portland blog is moving to something bigger and better.

We started the Heifer Portland blog back in Feb 09 as a medium to communicate with our volunteers and supporters in our community. Since then the blog has evolved into a sophisticated design that is admired by Heifer International headquarters and other volunteer groups around the world.

In the next few weeks we will be moving our blog to a central Heifer International blog website. This will make it easier to locate a volunteer group and find out what Heifer International is doing in your community. For example, if you live in Sacramento, California, and you want to find a Heifer volunteer group in your city, just go to the Heifer International blog website and locate Heifer Sacramento, or Heifer Boston, Heifer Phoenix, Heifer Detroit, and so forth.

For the Heifer volunteer groups, there will be a blog template (similar to Heifer Portland) on the Heifer International blog website for you to download and use. Simple, easy and fun.

We will keep you posted when the Heifer Portland blog makes the transition.

In the meantime, here are some other exciting news...

At the BlogWorld and New Media Expo, Bryan (and Haley the cow) did an interview with WhatGives!?: A Site for Social Good. See the interview here or visit www.whatgives.com

The other day I did a picture storyboard about how I got involved with Heifer International on Whrrl. Whrrl is a super duper cool web and iPhone application that lets you tell and share a story with photos and text. Our friends at Spirit Jump told me about Whrrl and how easy it was to put a short story together. The next day, my little story is now Whrrl's "Featured Story" website front page. You can view the slide show here or visit whrll.com

We thank all of our volunteers and supporters for making Heifer Portland one of the best grassroots volunteer group today. What started as a seedling back in Feb 09 has grown into a tree of life...growing bigger and bigger each day.

Thank you.
