Christmas is just around the corner (I know it's hard to believe) and you'll be sorting out your naughty or nice list. Why are there people who go hungry? In most developed countries, a general scarcity of food is seldom the cause of hunger. The United States, for example, produces enough food for its 303 million people as well as for much of the rest of the world. It is the lack of means to acquire food that is the problem.

PASS ON THE GIFT. Dan West, founder of Heifer International, created a unique giving model called "Pass on the Gift." For every gift a Heifer International recipient receives, they must pass on the gift of equal or greater value to another person in need -- creating a ripple of hope that passes on from family to family, community to community, generation to generation. It is in that spirit that I "Pass on the Gift" to you so you may pass it on to others.

FACT. The average American uses almost twice the global average -- 655,939 gallons per person per year, enough to fill an entire Olympic-sized pool (World Ark Magazine, Holiday 2009)

Pride Charity for Heifer International. Pride Charity is an organization of young boys and girls in Valleyford, WA, committed to making a difference in the world with a simple mission of "Helping Others." Three boys, Sayge, Liam, and Preston are working with other local community members and the local schools to meet their goal of raising $5000 for Heifer International. Read their inspiring story here.

Give a man a Heifer...Feed Him for a Lifetime. Megan Isenberg takes into consideration a range of ethical issues when procuring, preparing and eating food. Her interest also includes sustainable living, the impact on natural and human environments, animal welfare, workers' rights, and food safety. So when she received her Heifer International Gift catalog in the mail, she instantly became a fan of the organization.

How 13 Friends Give to Heifer International. Thirteen friends decided to make a charitable contribution to Heifer International instead of giving big gifts.

Herdict Team Buys a Sheep! The Herdict Team chose to contribute a sheep, via Heifer International, to a family in need. I think "Shep," Herdict's mascot, will approve of the gift.

Peachy Green: A Greener Gift Exchange. With the economy still struggling to stay afloat and people generally more conscious about consumption and waste, wouldn’t it be wonderful to consider a greener gift exchange? Check out Peachy Green's post.
